Kula Manu

English Banner

The Department of English sponsors and publishes BYU-Hawaii's campus literary journal, Kula Manu. The journal has been a BYU-Hawaii tradition since for over 50 years.

Each winter semester, students enrolled in English 392, Introduction to Literary Editing and Publishing / Kula Manu, serve as the editorial staff for the journal. Students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to submit their poems, stories, personal essays, photographs, and artworks. Current students are eligible for prizes in each category. The journal is printed at BYU-Hawaii Print Services, and is usually available on campus before finals week (at the English Department office, the library, the Aloha Center, and the Reading and Writing Center).

To request a sample copy, please visit the English Department main office, 104 McKay.

To submit creative work to Kula Manu, go to, and read our submission guidelines.

(Note: Currently, submissions are only open for about two months at the start of winter semester. In the future, the journal hopes to establish an online platform that will publish work online throughout the year, in addition to the annual print edition.)
